We design and make wooden gates that reflect the period and scale of the house, ranging from the 17th century to modern day. Natural wood gates will be made in oak and left to weather. We don't recommend varnishes and sealants - the natural tannin in the oak will preserve the gate as long as the construction is correct and the silvery-grey appearance that emerges with time is greatly preferable to a microporous wood stain that has to be renewed regularly. We are happy to distress and bleach gates to help the aging process. For painted gates we use douglas fir or a similar high quality softwood. All ironwork will be designed specifically for each gate and forged in the traditional manner by our blacksmith.
